Eddie Izzard films a Party Election Broadcast for Labour

There are times when being a Labour Party supporter and volunteer is a real joy. I’ve been a life long fan of Eddie Izzard, so when ‘Inside the Campaign’ told me to go to Pinewood Studios, where Eddie was filming the Party Political Broadcast, you can imagine my reaction. I arrived at Pinewood  and found my way across the lot, passing the 007 Bond Film Stage. Eddie tells me he broke into Pinewood studios when he was 15, trying to break into showbusiness. Now when he goes to Pinewood he gets a very different reception.

I’ve never been on a film set, but the crew made me feel really welcome. I found myself a bit speechless and star struck with Eddie himself, but he is such a genuinely nice guy that it was hard to stay nervous. Eddie started with a script and then brought his own ideas, comedy and brilliance to it. To the huge enjoyment of everyone watching he improvised the film. The filming process was incredible to watch, as Eddie puts a huge amount of energy and creativity into getting the final broadcast just right. Getting to see him improvising was amazing. I kept on seeing members of the film crew having to stifle their giggles while the cameras rolled. Eddie is genuinely passionate about the Labour Party and its values, and he stressed how important it was to him to get this across.

ei10He’s previously made Youtube films for the Party about his favourite Labour achievements

and campaigned with Lucy Powell, candidate for Manchester Withington

His film with Kevin Spacey about the Labour Government’s ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ theatre initiative has been viewed on Youtube over 15,000 times.

Most recently, Eddie raised an incredible £1.85 million (so far) for Sport Relief by running marathons round the UK. He tells us why the experience inspired him about Britain: “It offends me massively when the Tories slag off Britain. I’ve been inspired by the people I met when I was running round the country…I believe in brilliant Britain”.
