Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party, said:
"On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish Muslims in every part of the United Kingdom and the world a peaceful Ramadan.
"Ramadan is when Muslims believe the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is a time when Muslims the world over gather to fast, pray, and reflect on Islam and its teachings.
"Ramadan this year is a good time to recall the contribution that Muslims have made to British life, including to our cultural life, our Armed Forces, and the Olympic team.
"It is also a time to reflect on the values we all share – values of service, charity, solidarity with those less fortunate than ourselves, and of looking out for others. Those are values which British Muslims and non-Muslims alike show in the quiet acts of responsibility and compassion they perform every day – giving to charity, travelling far to comfort a relative who is ill, or gathering together to work for a more compassionate society.
"This Ramadan, my thoughts are with Muslims here and across the world. Ramadan Kareem."
