Government should be giving our economy a boost not undermining British green businesses - Flint

25 July 2012

Caroline FlintCaroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on the publication of future renewable energy subsidy levels, which was delayed because of Government infighting, said:

"The Government’s shambolic review of support for renewable energy has done huge damage to investors’ confidence in the UK as a place to do business. Edward Davey might try to spin this as a victory for the Liberal Democrats, but UK plc has lost out because the Tory-led Government has the wrong priorities. Ministers would rather fight each other than fight for new jobs in clean energy and cheaper fuel bills for families and businesses.

"Onshore wind and large-scale solar projects face yet more uncertainty with another round of cuts potentially in the pipeline, and no one even knows what secret backroom deals have been done just to get this agreement.

"The transition to a low-carbon economy has the potential to be a huge source of wealth and employment for the UK. With Britain in a double-dip recession made in Downing Street, which today’s figures show is deepening, the last thing our economy needs is ministers scaring away firms that want to invest and create jobs here. The Government should be giving our economy a boost - not undermining British green businesses."
