Draft primary National Curriculum response - Stephen Twigg

11 June 2012

Stephen TwiggStephen Twigg MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, responding to the publication of the draft primary National Curriculum programmes of study for English, Maths and Science, said:

“Labour supports a strong focus on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science from an early age, as well as making learning a foreign language compulsory from age seven.

“However, as well as ensuring that children have a firm basis in knowledge and facts, they need to develop transferable skills that will enable them to succeed in secondary school and in later life. Alongside reform, we have to ensure there is a way of measuring progress during primary school as well as raw results.

“Ultimately, we know that many primaries do well in preparing children for secondary school, the Government must ensure it bases its reforms not on ideology, but on what works in the classroom.”
