Marriage tax breaks disarray reveals Osborne's weakness
Liam Byrne MP, Labour's Chief Secretary to the Treasury, responding to confusion over whether or not the Conservatives are committed to tax breaks for married couples on the day of another Iain Duncan Smith report on marriage, said:
"As another high-profile Tory tax promise falls into total disarray, the British people are beginning to see the great risk posed to the economy by the inexperience and poor judgement of David Cameron and George Osborne.
"Their confusion over the marriage tax promise is an admission that George Osborne just can't get his sums right. Until now, he has always argued that his £3.2 billion marriage tax allowance was fully funded by green tax rises. If he has now been forced to abandon that plan it goes to the heart of his credibility on managing the public finances.
"When it comes to the economy David Cameron and George Osborne are simply not on top of their job - we saw it with their opposition to action to rescue savers at Northern Rock, in their opposition to the fiscal stimulus and in their totally isolated approach to the global economic downturn."
