Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting ahead of his speech to the Social Market Foundation on the future of childcare, said:
“If you talk to anyone with young children they will tell you the current system just doesn’t make sense for hardworking families.
“With over 30,000 women leaving work last year because they couldn’t afford childcare, and costs spiralling all the time, there’s no question that the system needs to be improved. Yet cuts to tax credits which kick in this April are going to make the challenge for families tougher still.
“That’s why the childcare debate is now a national priority.”
