Stephen Twigg MP, Labour's Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on the 2% decline in childcare staff, said:

"David Cameron is presiding over a crisis in childcare, with fewer places, higher costs and quality under threat.

"We need to increase the numbers of childcare staff, but this Government has cut them.

"With 401 fewer Sure Start children's centres and half no longer providing onsite childcare, this Government's promise to be the most family friendly ever is in tatters."
