Crisis in dementia cannot be tackled until we tackle the crisis in social care - Kendall8 November 2012
Liz Kendall MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Care and Older People, responding to the launch of the Dementia Friends scheme, said:
“This is a good initiative which could help increase understanding about dementia and how it affects people's daily lives.
“But the Government has failed to understand that we can't properly tackle the crisis in dementia until we tackle the crisis in social care.
“Thousands of older people and their families face a desperate struggle as vital services like home help are cut to the bone. Many more home visits now last barely 15 minutes which is totally inadequate to get an elderly person with dementia up, washed, dressed and fed.
“And millions of families are being forced to pay cruel dementia taxes because of increased care charges.
“The Government must tackle the immediate care crisis and put in place a better, fairer system for funding social care in future.”
