Chris Leslie MP, Labour’s shadow Treasury minister, responding to ONS construction figures for the first quarter of 2011 today, said:
“These very concerning figures show that the contraction in the construction industry has been a key factor in pushing Britain into recession. While Ministers claim the double-dip recession is nothing to do with their policies these figures show just how hard the construction industry has been hit by cuts in public investment that go too far and too fast.
“Labour’s five point plan for jobs would help to get the construction industry moving again, with a bank bonus tax to fund 25,000 affordable homes and bringing forward infrastructure projects to strengthen our economy for the long-term. It’s time David Cameron and George Osborne stopped sitting on their hands and got a plan for growth, which is vital to get our economy moving and so get the deficit down too.”
