Peter Hain speaks to Conference

Peter Hain- Check against delivery -

And the alternative to our Labour government - committed to social justice - is becoming ever clearer. A Tory Leader who's desperately trying to give his Party a re-spray whilst putting John Redwood - yes, John Redwood - in charge of economic policy.

Redwood's report, recommended watering down Health and Safety at Work legislation, at the very time more building workers have been dying.

It recommended taking Britain out of the Social Chapter, and back to the no-rights culture of the last Tory government.

And David Cameron endorsed the Redwood Report, which is a threat to every working man and woman in the country.

Let me also be clear: Remploy has a good future - with both change for Remploy and justice for Remploy workers.

We have agreed a good Composite on Remploy, and I can confirm to Conference today that government policy is fully in line with this Composite.

Both unions and management agree that Remploy must change to have a financially sustainable future. We have a duty to help even more disabled people into work, while continuing to help those for whom supported employment remains the best option.

And both unions and management agree that winning more public procurement is crucial, using European procurement rules to bring reliable, good quality public contracts into supported factories and businesses. And I am working with my Cabinet colleagues to address this.

But despite this common ground, there's been far too little progress on reaching an agreement.

That's why, in August, I asked the former Unison officer Roger Poole to chair new negotiations between Remploy and the trade unions - the GMB, Unite and Community - with a moratorium to help find a solution. I believe they can succeed and reach an agreement.

I have also made clear to Remploy management that no factory closures will take place without the agreement of government ministers.

And, whatever the final shape of that agreement, the government will provide a subsidy of more than half a billion pounds over five years - a £555 million package - for Remploy to have a successful future - a figure the trade unions have also agreed.

And a categorical guarantee: There will be no compulsory redundancies for Remploy's disabled workers. Salaries guaranteed. Full final salary pensions protected.

The past ten years have shown what our ambitions can achieve.
Now, we need to be more ambitious still, as we strive to abolish child poverty, secure justice for pensioners and full employment, with opportunities not just for a few, but for every single person.

The genuine people on benifits are victimised by the DWP if they try to help themselves or do ANY voluntary work. DWP stated publicly::If one can doorknock in elections then one should be working in sales, similarly with telephone canversing.Beware you are biting the hands which create you.Maybe Tory supporters using this to destroy labour core support???What about Citizenship for all???

I agree with you totally Steve, my son has certainly been victimised. I suspect there is a system in place, whereby professionals have been told to get the figures down at any cost. Gordon Brown talks of families, well his system has let my son down badly. You don’t see the 17/18 year old summoned to the office when she’s brought another mouth into the world. Oh no the pick on the easy targets. What did Gordon Brown say “I want to reward those people who play by the rules”, and wasn’t education a passion? Well my son is trying to do both, but hey his life doesn’t matter it’s all about figures. I have e-mail both Gordon Brown and Peter Hain, but so far silence.

My son suffered a massive Brain Hemorrhage in 2004 and since then, without going into detail, has had many medical problems. He was 25 years old. He lost his job and was medically retired, he went on incapacity benefit, but he was determined to make something of his life. While undergoing treatment he enrolled on an Open University course and passed. He set his sights on going to university and managed to secure a place. You state on your web-site that "The principles and values remain constant equality and opportunity, rights and responsibilities: work for those who can and support for those who can’t." For those who can’t Mr Hain! The system doesn’t work Mr Hain as my son has found out by having his incapacity benefit stopped. It’s a system that rewards Alcoholics and drug addicts, check the points system. People who had choices in their afflictions. The system is prepared to put as many obstacles as it can in front of genuine people. I won’t go into detail, but the word falsify comes to mind. I want to write to you with a full account of my son, but I am worried that you personally will not see it. What do I do?
