Ed Miliband’s message to Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg
Dear Jens,
It is with the greatest sadness that I write to you today to express my and my Party’s sympathy for your Party and your country, following the atrocities that happened yesterday in Norway.
Along with millions around the world I have watched with horror as the events have unfolded and the magnitude of the tragedy that Norway has experienced has been revealed.
As the Leader of the British Labour Party I want to pass on our deepest condolences to the Arbeiderparti, to the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking, and of course to the families and friends of all those who lost loved ones, and are suffering such immeasurable loss.
You spoke movingly and with great dignity yesterday of the strength of the values that unite not just the Labour Party in Norway, but the whole Norwegian people. We stand in solidarity with you all at this most terrible of times.

We have been members of the British Labour Party since 1964 and have always felt proud to know we have comrades and friends in other European countries. We are both old enough to remember the Second World War and know of the heroic part played by Norwegians under occupation and by those members of the Free Norwegian Forces who we can recall seeing in the streetsof London. This makes us feel a special bond with you now and the deepest sympathy for the families of those victims of this man. I have nothing but admiration for the Norwegian people. I had the privilege of working with the Norwegian Police for three years in the 1990's and I know they would have done their utmost to resolve this dreadful disaster. I send my heart felt commiserations!
I am in my 60's - and would willingly have taken the place of one of those young people with their whole life before them. We had our jazz appreciation group on Thursday and I played a piece by a Norwegian jazz group so that we could think about you all.

Never let anyone take those away from you. Everyone I have seen on the television and in the media in general has spoken with integrity, dignity and love; if only every country in the world could do the same. As a Councillor I enjoyed visits to Norway because of friendship links between the former Alnwick District Council and Time Commune. I have so many happy memories of those times. Norway is a beautiful country. Norwegians are peace-loving, welcoming and generous. I was most impressed by the priority given to the encouragement and development of young people; and that investment brought huge benefits, not just to the youngsters, but to society. The tragedy of recent events is that it had such an impact on young people and violates all that is good about Norway. The response of the Norwegian people has been magnificent. As fellow young social democrats we were all shocked by the news of this terrible tragedy. I am Cllr Zia from Luton,was deeply shocked to learn about the blood massacre of innocent people in Oslo. Our thoughts go with the bereaved families. We pray to God that these horribe incidents not happen in future.
These young people have joined an august group that have given everything to oppose the base instincts of those preditory insects that populate the right wing of politics. They are, in every sense working class heros.

The British media reported that the killer had been on extreme Christian websites. I cannot think of anything less Christian than killing children. I am so sorry for your loss.
The Norway massacre has appalled civilised people everywhere. That so beautiful and peaceful a land could be blasted by such evil seems incredible. Unnatural. And wrong. All the worse when so many of the slain were children and teenagers. An individual went berserk with explosives and a gun. He bombed, shot and killed dozens and dozens of innocent people; snuffed out many young lives. Cold-hearted, murderous and vile. The sicko responsible shows no remorse, no empathy, and not the least spark of humanity. And so many innocent people were helpless amidst his blood-bath - going about their daily business, to be mown down without warning by one man's cold, senseless hate. Scotland and Norway have strong and ancient links. Our thoughts are of course with them at this sad time. I hope Norway can rebuild. I believe they can. They must send a strong signal; and they are already determined on justice. But no one can fully explain this horror - or fathom a monster's mind. My condolences extend not just to Norway but family's of those killed.

I was saddened to hear of this person setting off explosions and shooting young people in your country. I hope that the person is tried and securely held for a long time. Such acts against innocent people show us how close to social breakdown we can be. I hope the society returns with strength and resoluteness to make sure this does not deflect society from helping one another to acheive better things in future.
