Ed Miliband’s message to Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg

Dear Jens,

It is with the greatest sadness that I write to you today to express my and my Party’s sympathy for your Party and your country, following the atrocities that happened yesterday in Norway.

Along with millions around the world I have watched with horror as the events have unfolded and the magnitude of the tragedy that Norway has experienced has been revealed.

As the Leader of the British Labour Party I want to pass on our deepest condolences to the Arbeiderparti, to the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking, and of course to the families and friends of all those who lost loved ones, and are suffering such immeasurable loss.

You spoke movingly and with great dignity yesterday of the strength of the values that unite not just the Labour Party in Norway, but the whole Norwegian people.   We stand in solidarity with you all at this most terrible of times.

Please let me know if I can help you in any way in the coming days and weeks.

With my very best wishes

Ed Miliband

Ray Collins' and Iain McNicol's message to Raymond Johansen, General Secretary, Arbeiderpartiet

Dear Raymond,

On behalf of the British Labour Party we are writing to express our deepest condolences to you and the Arbeiderpartiet at this terrible time.

We have all been shocked and horrified to watch the events unfold over the weekend and it is impossible to comprehend the full extent of what has transpired for the Arbeiderpartiet and for Norway. An attack not just on the value of democracy but on those who have been brave enough and strong enough to live by the principle that together we can build a better society for all. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims who mourn for such a tragic and senseless loss of life.

People from across the British Labour Party have been expressing their deepest concern and support and we all offer the Arbeiderpartiet and the Arbeidernes Ungdomfylking our profoundest solidarity.

Yours sincerely,

Ray Collins and Iain McNicol

Donate to Utøya for All

Many of you have asked how you can constructively help the DNA and the AUF in these difficult times, beyond just messages of solidarity. The AUF have launched a campaign, "Utøya for All." There is a strong need to restore the island to its status as a place of democracy and openness, to make Utøya to a place where young people can continue to gather each summer. Utøya will also be a place for important work in consoling those who have survived such unimaginable terror.

I am the father of five children, I cannot begin to imagine the grief that the parents, family and love ones of those who lost their lives in such a wicked fashion must be feeling. My heartfelt condolences to you all. The reaction of the Norwegian Prime Minister, and the sense we get in the UK of the mood in Norway - that evil must not be fought with evil; that Norway will not abandon it's tradition of tolerance and that the Norwegian Labour Party will not abandon it's principles because of this one evil act do the country and the party great honour and set an example for the world. God bless you all.

We have shocked and mortified with the sheer scale and the horror of the events that have unfolded over the past days. Iit is impossible to comprehend the full extent of what has transpired for the Arbeiderpartiet and for Norway. The murder of such a huge number of young people is hard to make sense of and harder still to try and understand the horror of what those who died and those who survived went through. Only tolerance and hope can answer the deadly politics of hate. It is up to the labour movement internationally to respond directly to the hate-filled politics of the far-right and in so doing to honour and remember those who have been victims.

  • Sue Wilkinson

Doncaster Central Constituency Labour Party asked me as secretary to send a meessage conveying their shock and horror that such a tragedy could happen. Those who died in this tragedy did so in defence of the democracy and freedom to express opinions - ideals which we all cherish, not least of all through our memership of the Labour Party in the UK. In offering our deepest sympathies, we are aware that the most effective tribute we can pay to their memory is in actively pursuing those ideals for which they perished at the hands of someone totally evil.

There has been so much dignity and humanity in the way that you have been dealing with these massacres, at the hands of one man. I have been profoundly moved by appeals to the whole community to care for and love the families of all those affected by these shootings. I honour you all for the measured tone you have all addressed to the media when speaking of these horrific events. I hope that you will continue to know that the international labour movement respects you so much as you grieve at this deeply sorrowful time.

  • Jan Paulger

My thought and sincere condolences are with you at this terrible time

  • Kumar Roy

Dear Prime Minister, I am deeply saddened and distressed to learn of the terrible attacks in your country recently. I have had the opportunity to visit lovely Oslo several times and enjoyed each trip thoroughly. I wish to share your sorrow & of those of your countrymen. My prayers are for the departed souls and heartfelt condolences to their families.

  • Douglas and Marion Lock

We were appalled by the horror of the bomb and shooting attacks. Our memories of the kindness and hospitality we received from friends in Norway and the happy memories we had from teaching and hosting Norwegian students in Bournemouth reminded us of the pleasant Norwegian way of life.. This bizarre affair is beyond understanding and our deepest and warmest sympathies are extended to your nation.

  • Peter Long

Braintree & Witham CLPs send their sincere condolences to all who have suffered in this horrific attack on the youth and future of Norwegian politics. Our thoughts are with the people of Norway.

  • Celia Nicholson

Your bravery and dignity have been inspirational in these very difficult times

  • Stuart Gilbert

Such inhumanity to others even if perpetrated by a madman must call out a sense of solidarity from the rest of us both Norwegian and British.

  • Otis Manasseh Orteseh

The saddest awakening reality for any nation when the lives of its future young leaders are suddenly snatched in such a cruel calculated inhuman manner is beyond conprehension for even the entire world to seek any humanly answer to forgive. Yet the families & nation must hold fast together as we all around the globe hope they can accept our condolences.

  • Jackie Richards

There are no words to express the horror we all feel in England at the loss of so many young people in such a way. Our prayers are with you and all those who have been affected by this tragedy. God Bless you all.

  • Sonia Barker

Thinking of you all in Norway at this sad time and sincere sympathies to those who have lost a loved one. Sonia

  • Aubrey Jones

I have nothing but admiration for the Norwegian people. I had the privilege of working with the Norwegian Police for three years in the 1990's and I know they would have done their utmost to resolve this dreadful disaster. I send my heart felt commiserations!

  • Sue Rix

I am in my 60's - and would willingly have taken the place of one of those young people with their whole life before them. We had our jazz appreciation group on Thursday and I played a piece by a Norwegian jazz group so that we could think about you all.

  • Maureen Cook

Condolences and sympathy from a fellow Labour Party member.

  • Caroline Whiteson

I would like to offer my condolences to the people of Norway; in particular, to those directly affected by the recent atrocities. I cannot imagine the suffering now felt by those whose relatives had their lives so cruelly cut short. I would also like to add how impressed I have been by your nation's responses, in terms of being determined to stay true to your values of equality, openness and cultural diversity. Never let anyone take those away from you. Everyone I have seen on the television and in the media in general has spoken with integrity, dignity and love; if only every country in the world could do the same. You are role models for human beings the world over. Once again, my deepest and most sincere sympathies.

  • Michael Alder

So sad. Such a waste. Devastating. Much love to the bereaved. Mike Alder

  • sheila lahey

What a terrible waste of young lives and for what! A misguided and twisted belief in the superiority of race. A society based on the premise of hatred cannot and must not take root. To the Norwegian people for their dignity, courage and respect for each other.

  • Laura Cook

My thoughts are with you all at this time. Take strength in solidarity.

  • Saxon Spence

I was devastated to hear of this appalling event. My deepest sympathy to all Norwegian Comrades for your great loss. You are in our thoughts.

  • Robert Arckless

As a Councillor I enjoyed visits to Norway because of friendship links between the former Alnwick District Council and Time Commune. I have so many happy memories of those times. Norway is a beautiful country. Norwegians are peace-loving, welcoming and generous. I was most impressed by the priority given to the encouragement and development of young people; and that investment brought huge benefits, not just to the youngsters, but to society. The tragedy of recent events is that it had such an impact on young people and violates all that is good about Norway. The response of the Norwegian people has been magnificent. May it help to know that the love and prayers of Norway's many friends are with you at this time. Robert Arckless Northumberland County Councillor

  • Evan Williams

We cannot immagine the grief and horror you are experiencing now, but our thoughts are with you now and in the future.

The strength and courage the Norwegian people have shown these past few weeks has been an inspiration for us all to continue working to build a safer and more tolerant society here in London, up and down the UK and across Europe.

These young people have joined an august group that have given everything to oppose the base instincts of those preditory insects that populate the right wing of politics. They are, in every sense working class heros.

In total shock and disbelief of the events of that Friday. Such a cowardly and senseless act of evil against young innocent lifes on the island of Utoya . • Deborah Segalini

Dear friends in Norway We were shocked when we heard the news from Norway; the loss of so many of your young ones touches us as if they were our own, and we continue to grieve with you. But we are heartened by Mr Stoltenberg's words over the last week and by the reactions of the survivors. We are amazed by the spirit with which your country is facing this horrible tragedy, and proud to call you our brothers and sisters. In solidarity and affection Deborah Segalini (chair of Hitchin & Harpenden CLP)

  • christopher belton-reed

Such terrible selfish actions of this gunman cannot be condoned. For so many to lose their lives and leave their families in such termoil is unforgivable. No matter how important it might seem to get a message across to society, this is not the way to do it . Debate and strong argument, changing peoples minds by reasoning is. My family and I send our best wishes for all concerned

  • John Drewery

I am sending this message as the Secretary of the Yorkshire and Humberside Co-operative Party to offer our sincere condolences in the aftermath of the terrible attack on Utoya island. The progressive forces of the world need to strengthen our efforts to oppose the violence and irrationality of the extreme right.

  • Tony Bavington

The British media reported that the killer had been on extreme Christian websites. I cannot think of anything less Christian than killing children. I am so sorry for your loss.

  • Gordon Barlow

The Norway massacre has appalled civilised people everywhere. That so beautiful and peaceful a land could be blasted by such evil seems incredible. Unnatural. And wrong. All the worse when so many of the slain were children and teenagers. An individual went berserk with explosives and a gun. He bombed, shot and killed dozens and dozens of innocent people; snuffed out many young lives. Cold-hearted, murderous and vile. The sicko responsible shows no remorse, no empathy, and not the least spark of humanity. And so many innocent people were helpless amidst his blood-bath - going about their daily business, to be mown down without warning by one man's cold, senseless hate. Scotland and Norway have strong and ancient links. Our thoughts are of course with them at this sad time. I hope Norway can rebuild. I believe they can. They must send a strong signal; and they are already determined on justice. But no one can fully explain this horror - or fathom a monster's mind. My condolences extend not just to Norway but family's of those killed.

  • Ken Mcritchie

Give my love all of norway

  • Karen Connolly

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. R.I.P those that were taken in such tragic pointless circumstances and may the world unite to stamp such hatred and evil out. X

  • Edward Arckless

As the Maitre de ballet in Paris France that wellcome a lot of dancers from Norway in to my class I can just say that all of them have been wonderfull.and I am very sad for this tragic loss of life Edward Arckless

  • David Nevett

I was saddened to hear of this person setting off explosions and shooting young people in your country. I hope that the person is tried and securely held for a long time. Such acts against innocent people show us how close to social breakdown we can be. I hope the society returns with strength and resoluteness to make sure this does not deflect society from helping one another to acheive better things in future.

  • Alastair and Sandra Osborne

Our thoughts are with the Arbeiderparti, the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking, and of course the families and friends of all those who lost loved ones, We join hands with you in socialist solidarity.
