Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, said today during a visit to Bristol:
"It's welcome that the Government has responded to calls for a Commission into the riots. It's only by listening to the communities affected that we'll get the solutions we need to make sure this doesn't happen again.
"What those communities have told me is that we need greater responsibility in Britain, and that we need greater opportunity for our young people so they have a stake in society.
"A commission reporting to all three party leaders gives us the chance to come together, work together, and make the changes we need.
"Of course there are lessons to learn from the events of the last week about how we do our policing.
"But we should be clear, the real lesson for the Government is that people want visible effective policing. It makes our streets safer and increases public confidence.
"The public won't understand why the Government is going ahead with cuts to the police. Ministers should think again on those plans which will see 16,000 fewer police officers."
