Child poverty: Cameron has buried compassionate conservatism for good - Byrne

1 December 2011

Liam ByrneLabour's Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Liam Byrne said:

"David Cameron has just buried compassionate conservatism for good. He promised us he was a different kind of Tory. Now we know he's just like the worst of the Tories' past.

"This Government has just decided to take twice as much from families and children as from our countries bankers, plunging over half a million children into absolute poverty. That tells you everything you need to know about this government’s values.

“Five years ago David Cameron said that ‘we need to think of poverty in relative terms... the Conservative Party recognises, will measure and will act on relative poverty’ in 2006  when he wanted to decontaminate the Tory brand. Now he says the opposite. He doesn’t even agree with his own policy."
