Chaos at DWP is stalling reforms and with economy back in recession welfare bill is going through the roof - Byrne

Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to David Cameron’s speech today, said:

“Once upon a time we were told Universal Credit and the Work Programme were the final words in welfare reform. Now David Cameron is making an entirely new plan.

“The reason why is simple. Chaos at DWP is stalling the Government’s reforms and with the economy back in recession the welfare bill is going through the roof.”

Responding to reports that David Cameron dropped elements of his speech at the last minute, Liam Byrne said:

“The Government’s welfare plans are so shambolic that some policies didn’t even survive the morning. This is real back of a fag packet stuff.”
