Liz Kendall MP, Labour's Shadow Minister for Care and Older People, responding to today's reports of Jeremy Hunt's comments on dementia, said:
"The Government is in complete denial about the impact their cuts to social care are having on the ground. David Cameron and Jeremy Hunt must face up to the reality that we cannot tackle the crisis in dementia unless we tackle the crisis in care.
"Earlier diagnosis is essential to ensure people with dementia get the best possible care and support.
"Older people need hope that something can be done if they are diagnosed, and GPs need the right skills to spot the early signs.
"Patients and NHS staff also need to know there are decent services available for people with dementia.
"This means drugs where appropriate but crucially proper information, advice, care and support.
"Thousands of older people with dementia and their families face a desperate daily struggle because of the crisis in social care."
