Cameron and now the Shapps have given the impression that rents are falling when all the evidence points the other way - Dromey

2 February 2012

Jack DromeyJack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Housing Minister, has written to the Housing Minister, Grant Shapps, following the exchanges over rent levels at Communities and Local Government Questions on Monday:

“We knew David Cameron was out of touch with families across Britain when he claimed that rents are falling across the country, but now we know Grant Shapps is as well.

"First the Prime Minister and now the Housing Minister have given the impression that rents are falling when all the evidence points the other way.

"Those people who face a monthly struggle to pay rising rent and are having to cut back on food for their families will wonder what planet the Prime Minister and Housing Minister are on. They will think, and rightly so, that the Government is completely out-of-touch with the pressure on families all over Britain.

"The same report that Grant Shapps used on the floor of the House of Commons to justify his claims states that average rents increased by 4% last year and goes on to suggest that it won’t be long before they resume their upward march. That’s why I have asked him to come to the House to put the record straight, rents are rising, not falling."
