Andy Burnham, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, responding to David Cameron’s claims in Prime Minister’s Questions, said:
“David Cameron was left clutching at straws today in PMQs in a desperate bid to shore-up collapsing support for his Health Bill. The only evidence he could cite of professional support for his reorganisation was a year-old quote from a single GP in Yorkshire. His abject failure to build professional consensus behind his plans was laid bare at the Despatch Box.
“David Cameron himself said that change in the NHS would only succeed if it had the support of health professionals. By his own measure, he has failed. A plan sold as empowering the professions has only succeeded in uniting them in opposition to it. That is because NHS professionals have seen through the PM’s words and can see the real agenda behind this Bill; a privatisation plan for the NHS.
“The Prime Minister has pushed the NHS to the brink by reorganising at this time of financial stress. He must now listen to NHS patients and staff, drop this Bill and put the NHS first.”
