Kevin Brennan MP, Labour’s Shadow Schools Minister, commenting on the Public Accounts Committee Report, Managing the expansion of the Academies Programme, said:
“This is yet more damning evidence of how David Cameron and Michael Gove’s policies are undermining our schools and threatening the futures of our young people.
“While head teachers are seeing their budgets squeezed, the Government has managed to waste £ 1 billion by mismanaging the academies programme. The PAC makes clear that this overspend on academies has taken money away from struggling schools, which flies in the face of efforts to raise standards in education.
“Ministers need to realise that you can’t run thousands of schools from Whitehall. As the Public Accounts Committee makes clear, the Department for Education must improve efficiency and financial oversight, along with ensuring there is effective local accountability and transparency for academies.”
