Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to the DWP Select Committee report on Youth Unemployment and the Youth Contract, said:
"This major cross-party report is crystal clear: the Tory led Government's plan for youth jobs is failing and we need to change course fast. The select committee doesn't pull its punches: Labour's approach, which the Government hastily shut down, was working.
"To add insult to injury, ministers are refusing to tell us how many jobs their failing youth contract has even created. That tells us something is very wrong.
"This is now a very loud wake-up call, at a time when the country is in a double dip recession made in Downing Street. The Government is now on a warning: change course now or you'll fail. Now is the time for a sensible tax on bankers bonuses to create a fund that'll help us get 100,000 young people back to work."
