Building Tomorrow Today - Speech to Congress

Gordon BrownLabour’s Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has addressed a joint session of Congress in Washington.

The Prime Minister highlighted the common approach that the two administrations are taking to combat the global economic downturn and how common action and a shared approach can hasten the end of the current economic difficulties and build a strong foundation for the future.

By starting to build tomorrow today - by providing help for families and businesses during tough economic times and by investing in the future - Britain and America can emerge from the down turn quicker and stronger and take advantage of the opportunities of the years ahead.

During the speech, Gordon Brown said:

“I believe that ours is a time for renewal, for a plan for tackling recession and building for the future.

"When banks have failed and markets have faltered, we the representatives of the people have to be the people's last line of defence.

"And that's why there is no financial orthodoxy so entrenched, no conventional thinking so engrained, no special interest so strong that it should ever stand in the way of the change that hard-working families need.

"Let us restore prosperity and protect this planet and, with faith in the future, let us together build tomorrow today"
