David Cameron should give a categorical assurance that he won't abolish the DCMS after the Olympics - Harman

20 April 2012

Harriet HarmanHarriet Harman MP, Labour’s Deputy Leader and Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, commenting on speculation about Government plans to axe the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), said:

"David Cameron could allay fears once and for all by giving a categorical assurance that he will not abolish the DCMS after the Olympics, despite calls from Tory ministers. He could scotch this rumour very easily.

"The DCMS provides a vital voice for culture, media and sport from free entry to museums and galleries and boosting British film to bringing the Olympics to London.

"If the DCMS were to be scrapped then so too would the respected DCMS Select Committee, which has done such important work on exposing phone hacking.

“Culture, media and sport need a seat at the Cabinet table. After the shambles of the Budget, their voice needs to be stronger, not silenced.

"I urge David Cameron to think again."
