There is a need to look at the cost of childcare which is why Labour established a commission earlier this year - Twigg

19 June 2012

Stephen TwiggStephen Twigg MP, Labour's Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on Government proposals for a commission on childcare, said:

"There is a need to look at the cost of childcare, which is why Labour established a commission earlier this year to examine the best ideas from countries like Sweden and Denmark as well as at home.

"But the quality of childcare needs protecting. Our concern is that with Sure Start children's centres closing or being hollowed out, and the Government favouring deregulation, that quality childcare could be at risk in the drive to save money.

"Parents are facing a triple whammy on childcare, with costs rising, places falling, and the support they receive from government through tax credits being slashed."
